Schoenhouse apartments are in a great location on one of Prenzlauer Berg/Mitte’s main arteries, Schonhauser Allee. You get to stay in the thick of things with shops, a bank machine and several good restaurants and late night venues like White Trash Fast Food and the Volksbar on your doorstep. It’s a few minutes walk to U-Bahn stations on the U2 (Rosa Luxemburg Platz, Senefelder Platz and Alexander Platz or), as well as into the trendy fashion district of Alte and Neue Schonhauser Strasses and the sights and shops of the beautiful Hackeschen Hoefe. In the other direction, the great shops, bars and restaurants of Prenzlauer Berg are a little stroll away.
My first thought when our good friends opted to stay there, was that because of the apartments location, it was going to be noisy. In fact, it wasn’t and when we visited the apartments for ourselves we saw that they were well set back in courtyards and insulated from the outside action.
The apartments themselves are clean, light, spacious and pretty, if not cosy and charming-I myself find this sort of plywood place a bit bland and empty, but my minimalist, high tech mates loved it. They all have free wireless internet and come with fully equipped kitchens if you feel like cooking and eating in.
Although the apartments themselves aren’t especially homey, the ground floor communal space is fabulous! Here the friendly chefs of the Schoenschmecker Deli serve breakfast, light lunches of pasta, salads and sandwiches and yummy cakes and muffins. It felt like a relaxed space in which my friends could meet and chat with other guests or feel absolutely comfortable eating alone or working quietly over a coffee.
